In
1998, The Tiger Foundation was invited by the Global Survival Network
(recently renamed Wildaid) to join an alliance in support of a Myanmar-based
NGO known as FREDA (Forest Resource Environmental Development Association).
TTF has since become a partner of Wildaid, the David Shepherd Conservation
Foundation (DSCF) and FREDA in the implementation of this innovative
anti-poaching program known as Shen Than Yay. Sadly, during the first
year of the project, it was determined that poachers were able to
kill the last surviving tigers in the area in which the project operated.
TTF's support of Shen Than Yay has been discontinued. Nevertheless,
the following project description will introduce you to a well-conceived
and executed program that, unfortunately, was unable to save tigers
that once lived under ideal conditions. The lessons we have learned
here underscore the critical situation that tigers face, even in areas
of prime habitat, and alert us to the need for urgent action. |
